Saturday was the first time Town had named an unchanged side for four successive games since the 1997/98 season. But that run is some way short of the club’s record unchanged run set in the 1991/92 Second Division championship-winning campaign.

Town will have to pay Tranmere compensation of £240,000 rising to £520,000 based on appearances and promotion for left-back Aaron Cresswell, this afternoon’s tribunal in Manchester has decided. The 21-year-old free agent joined the Blues in the summer, signing a three-year deal, with Rovers entitled to compensation as the Liverpudlian is under 24 and had been offered new terms by the League One club.

Town boss Paul Jewell will ring the changes tonight when his side take on Northampton in the first round of the Carling Cup at Portman Road (KO 7.45pm). The Blues boss has confirmed that Arran Lee-Barrett will start in goal, while Tommy Smith will return to the defence, Nathan Ellington is likely to make his first start for Town up front and 15-year-old Byron Lawrence is set to be amongst the subs.

Lee Bowyer scored his first goal in a Town shirt but Paul Jewell’s men were beaten 2-1 by Wolves in their final pre-season friendly at Portman Road. After an impressive first period, Bowyer put the Blues ahead just before half-time, Stephen Hunt and then a later Sylvan Ebanks-Blake penalty winning it for the visitors after the break.

Hull City have emerged as new contenders for the signature of departing Town skipper David Norris. Leadbitter suffered a head injury at Bristol City on Saturday, while Kennedy missed the trip to Ashton Gate with a tight hamstring.
